Our acoustic solutions include innovative practical designs to tackle sound quality issues in small and large open plan classrooms, communal spaces & libraries. Our objective is to support the changing pedagogy by providing teachers and students with the ability to better control sounds in their classes.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS THE ACOUSTICAL PROBLEM WITH 21ST CENTURY CLASSROOMS?

Noise can be a big problem with open-plan classrooms, especially the high noise levels coming from the other classes sharing the same space. This is particularly problematic when a class is trying to engage in critical listening activities where it is essential that the children can hear the new concepts they are being taught.

Across the country, classrooms are being transformed into engaging, vibrant spaces that facilitate collaboration, creativity, innovation and independent learning.

Education environments have changed and an ‘Open-Plan’ design now leads the way with zones and nooks and new approaches to seating and organisation are appearing because they make better spaces and places for creating engaging learning.

Classes are divided into classes of 20-30 students with their own teacher, however all of these classes are in the same room with no walls separating them, which results in 50, 90 or even 200 students in the one area.

The importance of acoustic design requirements is usually underestimated in planning stages.  If adequate speech intelligibility and acoustic comfort were provided, concentration would be easier and participants would be less frustrated and more productive.

If a teacher is having to raise their voice in order to be heard, there is an immediate issue that needs to be addressed. With teacher vocal strain and stress being one of the most frequent vocational complaints in the industry , it is extremely important we are providing healthy environments for both our educators and students.

Most times it is a mixture of both teaching techniques and acoustical treatments that can assist in providing an optimum learning environment.

Mumble provide a range of products that are ready to use in any classroom. Now stocked in USA.

WHATS THE SOLUTION?

Sound absorbing surfaces help to reduce noise from a learning environment, improving reverberation and ambient noise.

Acoustic wall panels are ideal for use in applications such as perimeter walls in open-plan spaces.
They complement acoustic ceilings by dampening the portion of sound that travels horizontally. As a result, they offer an attractive, functional way to add acoustic benefits to a space.

Our portable acoustic desk divider is specifically designed to temporarily create individual workspaces within a collaborative work area – complementing the teaching style and the new furniture.

The addition of the whiteboard surface now allows students to brainstorm, share their ideas, present to the class as well as concentrate in a private zone.

Within a flexible learning space, blocking sound between different activities can help control the noise levels. This can be achieved by using tall furniture or screens.

Freestanding panels/screens are semi-permanent features that help to create zones within and open-plan space that provides privacy both visually and audibly.

Open-plan spaces can be a difficult acoustic environment to design for. The ceiling is often the only surface you can use for any form of acoustic control.
With a flat ceiling, there really is nothing to stop sound reflecting off into the distance. Whilst partitions, furniture and planting can offer some obstruction at low level, sound traveling outwards and upwards can continue relatively unimpeded.

Classroom Acoustics and Learning Outcomes

WHY SPEECH INTELLIGIBILITY IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOUNG CHILDREN

The impact of poor acoustics varies and is largely dependent on the age of the child. For younger children who do not have the vocabulary or the maturity to understand how a conversation should unfold, filling in the gaps can be next to impossible whilst noise in general can create much stress for children of all ages in a learning environment.

Classrooms are auditory-verbal environments where instruction is presented through teacher’s spoken communication. Noise in classrooms is becoming a much discussed topic now a days due to the change in classroom design to open plan and dynamic environments and it’s evident impact on the acoustic performance in the rooms. Poor acoustics have a significantly negative impact on Speech intelligibility in the classroom. Children must be able to hear, attend to, and listen to the teacher and each other in order for learning to occur.

The impact of poor acoustics varies and is largely dependent on the age of the child. For younger children who do not have the vocabulary or the maturity to understand how a conversation should unfold, filling in the gaps can be next to impossible whilst noise in general can create much stress for children of all ages in a learning environment.

To fulfil the role of a learning environment, classrooms should have acoustic properties that allow at least 90% of the useful information leaving a talker’s mouth to reach the ears of listeners. Factors affecting this include distance from the speaker, noise in the classroom and reverberation time. Also important to note is that changes in hearing thresholds, tinnitus, fatigue, poor concentration, vocal effort and unintelligible speech are also included in the list of side effects of poor acoustics in the classroom. If a teacher has to increase the volume of their voice to be understood, there is an acoustic issue that needs to be addressed for both the teacher’s health and student’s learning outcomes.

Mumble™ Acoustic products have been designed to assist to improve classroom acoustics and therefore improve better learning outcomes.
